About the position

The Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for delivering direct and indirect anesthesia care to patients across various services, including perioperative and obstetrical care. This role involves assessing patient needs, developing anesthetic plans, and ensuring safe, quality care through critical thinking and collaboration with healthcare teams. The Nurse Anesthetist also manages pain relief and responds to emergencies, adhering to professional standards and organizational policies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document a pre-anesthetic assessment and evaluation of the patient.
  • Interview the patient to discuss their medical history, including anesthesia experiences and drug therapy.
  • Develop and implement an anesthesia plan of care.
  • Re-evaluate the patient immediately prior to the induction of anesthesia.
  • Select and initiate the planned anesthetic technique, which may include general, regional, and/or local anesthesia and/or intravenous sedation.
  • Select, obtain, or administer the anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs, and fluids necessary to manage the anesthetic.
  • Manage the patient's airway and pulmonary status using endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy, or extubation.
  • Manage emergence and recovery from anesthesia by selecting, obtaining, ordering, and/or administering medications, fluids, and ventilator support.
  • Order, initiate, or modify pain relief therapy through drugs, regional anesthetic techniques, or other accepted modalities.
  • Respond to emergency situations by providing airway management and administering emergency fluids or drugs.
  • Assess/reassess the patient's condition and manage blood, fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
  • Deliver safe nurse anesthesia interventions in an organized, efficient, and prioritized manner.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with team members, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
  • Document accurately and maintain patient records.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new and tenured personnel.
  • Utilize measures to promote and maintain patient, visitor, and personnel safety.

Requirements

  • Current New Mexico and federal DEA certificate.
  • Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the state of New Mexico.
  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
  • Current certification as a nurse anesthetist from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor.
  • Current AHA Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Current AHA Healthcare Provider Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Current AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • Current New Mexico CRNA license.
  • Knowledge of the nursing role and scope of practice as defined by the state of New Mexico Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge of the nurse anesthetist role and scope of practice as defined by the AANA Scope and Standards for Nurse Anesthesia Practice.
