About the position

The Cross Categorical Special Education Aide at Shorewood School District is responsible for supporting students with disabilities in both general education classrooms and small group settings. This role involves assisting special education teachers in implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with various needs, including social, emotional, behavioral, and academic challenges. The aide will work closely with students to provide academic support, assist with personal care, and help maintain a conducive learning environment.

Responsibilities

  • Work with individual students with special needs or small groups to conduct and reinforce teacher-directed activities.
  • Provide academic support and curriculum modification as determined by student(s)' IEP.
  • Assist in the implementation of the student(s)' IEP.
  • Supervise and assist students with special needs on school grounds.
  • Support community-based instruction and vocational work experience as determined by special education teachers.
  • Assist in operation and maintenance of assistive devices and adaptive equipment as needed.
  • Assist students with toileting, dressing, feeding, personal hygiene, lifting and positioning as needed.
  • Assist in behavioral intervention programs and support co-regulation.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, student records, parents, staff and any other school-related issues.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by the Director of Special Education & Student Services and/or Building Principal.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • For highly qualified status, completion of 48 college credits or successful completion of one of the Paraprofessional Assessments.
  • Special Education Program Aide License issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • CPI Training.
  • Experience working with children/youth in structured activities.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Knowledge of fundamental computer skills and programs.
  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid WI Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with students with special needs (desired, but not required).
