About the position

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) is seeking an Archaeology Technician to support the National Park Service's Archeology program at Yellowstone National Park. This seasonal position involves working collaboratively with park staff to inventory, monitor, evaluate, and manage archaeological resources. The role includes fieldwork, laboratory work, and data management, providing a comprehensive experience in archaeological practices.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pedestrian surveys and take field notes.
  • Create field maps and take photographs of archaeological sites.
  • Operate GPS units and assist in identifying archaeological resources.
  • Delineate archaeological site boundaries and complete condition assessments.
  • Excavate shovel test and excavation units, screen soil matrix, and record/collect artifacts.
  • Record soils data and complete field forms.
  • Collect information for planning new fieldwork using maps and resources at the Heritage and Research Center.
  • Analyze and catalog artifacts, preparing them for final curation.
  • Prepare official archaeological site and isolated finds forms.
  • Draft site and project maps using ArcGIS Pro and the NPS ArcGIS Online Portal.
  • Assist with GIS database management and official Archeology Program records.
  • Develop final summary reports of research findings according to established guidelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural Resource Management, or a similar discipline.
  • Relevant field experience in archaeology, anthropology, cultural resource management, or a similar discipline.
  • Understanding of basic principles related to archaeological site condition assessments and site recordation.
  • Experience with standard field techniques to survey and assess archaeological resources.
  • Ability to navigate and collect data using handheld GPS units and read topographic maps.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro) for data and map manipulation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (e.g., Word, Excel).
  • Effective communication skills, both written and orally, with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Motivated, self-directed, organized, and detail-oriented to manage multiple tasks.
  • Physically fit to work long hours outdoors and carry field equipment.
  • Willingness to camp for consecutive days in backcountry settings.
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver's license.
