About the position

Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 2 to perform complex functions in defined research projects and independently conduct portions of these projects. The role involves supporting the operation of a state-of-the-art electron microscopy facility, which includes advanced equipment such as Aquilos FIB milling machines and Titan Krios microscopes. The position offers opportunities for professional growth within the research environment at Stanford and SLAC.

Responsibilities

  • Independently operate and maintain the Aquilos FIB milling machine and prepare samples.
  • Conduct a portion of the research project(s) and make recommendations on experimental design to the principal investigator.
  • Conduct complex experiments to gather data for major research projects.
  • Interpret and analyze results, modifying existing procedures as necessary.
  • Train and oversee users for FIB milling.
  • Evaluate the quality of data obtained by users.
  • Collaborate with the High Performance Computing team for computational needs.
  • Implement data collection strategies for the user community.
  • Develop new research protocols where necessary.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
  • Contribute to the preparation of papers for publication and present ongoing work at conferences.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in the lab.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed and serve as a technical resource.
  • Oversee daily laboratory activities, including maintenance and inventory management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related scientific field and two years of relevant work experience, or a Master's degree in a related scientific field.
  • 2-3 years of cryo-FIB milling and SEM experience with expertise in handling samples.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid understanding of cryo-FIB milling and SEM principles.
  • Familiarity with computational image processing and analysis of cryo-ET images.

Nice-to-haves

  • PhD or M.S. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, Bioengineering, Physics or related field.
  • Experience with cryo-ET, including microscope operation and data evaluation.
  • Understanding of single-particle analysis.
