About the position

The Cultural Advisor at Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) plays a vital role in promoting the integration of traditional values and healing methods into the clinic's services. This position serves as a bridge between the clinic and the Native community, ensuring that healthcare services are culturally inclusive and respectful of the traditions of the American Indian population. The Cultural Advisor is responsible for cultural advocacy, patient engagement, program development, and policy integration, all aimed at enhancing the quality of care provided to Native patients.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a resource and consultant to staff on inter-tribal cultural practices and sensitivities.
  • Assesses clinic operations for cultural appropriateness and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Conducts training and workshops on cultural awareness and traditional health practices.
  • Develops materials to increase staff understanding of issues affecting Native communities.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for patients seeking culturally aligned support.
  • Facilitates conversations between medical staff and patients regarding cultural practices and treatment plans.
  • Organizes cultural events and community forums to strengthen relationships with the community.
  • Collaborates with clinic leadership to integrate cultural perspectives into service delivery models.
  • Identifies resources to support traditional healing practices at the clinic.
  • Creates culturally tailored health education programs for patients and community members.
  • Stays informed of local tribal issues and events that may impact clinic services.
  • Works with administration to review and revise policies for cultural alignment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Social Work, Public Health, Native American Studies) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with Native populations in a cultural or advocacy role.
  • In-depth knowledge of Native cultural practices, traditions, and history relevant to the populations served.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build trust and maintain relationships with patients, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with health and wellness practices, including traditional medicine.

Nice-to-haves

  • Tribal affiliation or extensive experience working closely with local Native communities.
  • Experience in healthcare, social services, or public health settings.
