About The Position
The Cultural Food Advocate plays a crucial role in supporting the integration and stability of newly arrived refugees by providing extensive education on FoodShare, WIC, and extended cultural orientation aid. This position is dedicated to offering individualized services to refugees and asylees who require additional food support services to achieve self-sufficiency. The advocate will also work to promote the availability of culturally appropriate food in public spaces and assist with Hanan's food-related events. In this role, the Cultural Food Advocate will educate and assist both new and existing clients on the enrollment and utilization of FoodShare, SNAP, and WIC programs. A strong understanding of Halal food standards is essential, as the advocate will help clients navigate the community to ensure they have access to Halal and other culturally appropriate food options. The position also involves educating potential applicants and current FoodShare beneficiaries about the FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) program regulations to ensure compliance and maintain benefits. The advocate will run an onsite Halal Food Pantry, assisting new refugee clients who come to the center for food boxes. Coordination of various Halal food program events, such as the Halal turkey drive, Ramadan Food Box event, and Qurbani meat giveaway, is also a key responsibility. The Cultural Food Advocate will assist clients with grocery shopping, outreach to community groups for grocery donations, and local restaurants for hot meals upon arrival. Researching USDA resources for education, information, and potential funding opportunities is part of the role, as well as outreach to community partners for donations for food events. The advocate will also work to recruit volunteers for food-related events and ensure that each customer completes a food program survey, advocating for dignified customer service and compliance with civil and FoodShare rights. Additionally, the advocate will assist the community engagement team with other volunteer and event-related activities, which may require travel to clients' homes and food-related organizations as needed.
