About the position

The CUNY Start Writing Assistant is a part-time position designed to support the CUNY Start English program, which is an intensive pre-matriculation initiative aimed at enhancing the academic proficiency of associate degree-seeking students in English and mathematics. This role involves working closely with the Core teacher in a CUNY Start classroom, contributing to the educational development of students through various instructional formats, including in-person, online, and hybrid classes. The Writing Assistant will be responsible for familiarizing themselves with the CUNY Start English Curriculum and learning procedures, ensuring that they can effectively support the instructional goals of the program. In this position, the Writing Assistant will engage in a variety of tasks, including attending English classes, responding to student writing, facilitating small group discussions, and providing individual tutoring. The role also includes participation in team meetings to discuss student progress and involvement in professional development activities. The Writing Assistant will report directly to the CUNY Start Director at their designated campus and will be expected to perform various administrative duties as assigned by the Core teacher, such as taking attendance and managing classroom logistics. Responsibilities

  • Read the CUNY Start English Curriculum closely and become familiar with CUNY Start learning procedures, assignments, and goals.
  • Attend portions of the CUNY Start English class and support the CUNY Start Core teacher as appropriate.
  • Respond in writing to student papers and essays.
  • Facilitate and/or support small groups including circulating throughout the class to observe and guide student discussions.
  • Tutor CUNY Start students individually and in small groups.
  • Participate in CUNY Start team meetings about students' progress.
  • Participate in training activities led by the CUNY Start Professional Development team for English.
  • Perform duties assigned by the Core teacher, including taking attendance, tracking students' assignments, and setting up online and in-person classrooms.

Requirements

  • Experience responding to academic writing and working with non-traditional college students.
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Ability to assist students and perform duties online.

Benefits

  • $25.51 per hour for approximately 20 hours a week for 12 weeks with the possibility of continued appointment in the spring based on available funding and program need.
