About the position

The Custodian position at Bethel School District is a critical role responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security of assigned school facilities. This position is part-time, requiring 2 hours of work per day for 180 days each year, with a pay rate of $23.45 per hour. The custodian will prepare the building for school and public events as needed, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for students and staff. The role involves a variety of cleaning and custodial services, including vacuuming, dusting, mopping, sweeping, and cleaning bathrooms and showers. The custodian will also be responsible for opening and locking building doors, operating the alarm system, and maintaining awareness of after-hours building users. In addition to routine cleaning, the custodian will set up and take down equipment and furniture for events, assist teachers and students in locating equipment, and perform major summer cleaning tasks to prepare the facility for the new school year. The position requires effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public to ensure safety and security. The custodian will also perform minor repairs, such as painting and fixing leaks, and may operate various equipment, including hydraulic lifts and floor polishers. The role demands physical stamina, as custodians may need to stand for prolonged periods and move heavy objects. A pre-placement physical and testing are required, with costs covered by the district. The custodian will report to the Assistant Director or Manager of Facilities and will receive guidance from the head custodian and school administrator as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans assigned parts of the school facility to provide a sanitary and safe environment for student learning and support functions.
  • Opens and/or locks building doors and operates alarm system for security according to established procedures.
  • Sets up and takes down a wide variety of equipment and furniture for events, assemblies, and public use of school facilities.
  • Maintains effective communication with students, parents, staff, and the public for safety, security, and public relations.
  • Performs major summer cleaning of the facility, including floor finishes, furniture, equipment, painting, and repairs.
  • Spot cleans and makes minor repairs, such as painting, plastering, and fixing leaks.
  • Performs security checks of the facility, perimeter, doors, and windows.
  • Pressure washes locker rooms, showers, and kitchen areas as needed.
  • Washes windows and operates or uses hydraulic lift, ladders, scaffolding, and other equipment.
  • Stocks and orders custodial supplies as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education, training, skills, and experience necessary to carry out the assignment, with experience with cleaning equipment and techniques preferred.
  • Ability to distinguish cleaning compounds and materials.
  • Ability to learn the operation of a variety of cleaning equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of routine repairs and maintenance, including some painting, carpentry, plumbing, and other general maintenance.
  • Ability to move and position furniture and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety and security procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the public.
  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury, or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan.
  • May require valid Washington state driver's license.
