About the position

The City of Bellingham is seeking qualified Custodial Maintenance Workers to perform custodial and porter duties in city-maintained buildings. This role involves cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining facilities, as well as responding to sanitary hazards and performing minor maintenance tasks. The position is available at two levels: Custodial Maintenance Worker I, an entry-level role with training provided, and Custodial Maintenance Worker II, which requires more experience and the ability to work independently. The position may require working various shifts, including weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and maintains floors, carpets, walls, and windows.
  • Performs spot cleaning and full carpet cleaning as needed.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, shower rooms, and fixtures.
  • Empties trash and recycling containers and maintains their cleanliness.
  • Locks and unlocks buildings to complete assignments and secures them when not in use.
  • Cleans furniture, sinks, countertops, and other surfaces, dusting and sanitizing as appropriate.
  • Uses portable and power equipment such as mops, vacuums, and buffers to clean and maintain buildings.
  • Sets up and moves furniture for special events and returns it to its original location afterward.
  • Responds to and cleans up spills, including sanitary hazards, using appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Removes snow or debris from sidewalks and entryways using manual or power equipment.
  • Maintains supplies used for cleaning duties and notifies supervisors of any needs for replacements or repairs.
  • Performs minor maintenance tasks such as resetting circuit breakers and replacing light bulbs.
  • Assists in training and providing technical direction to lower classified staff.

Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to perform duties associated with commercial custodial work.
  • One year of experience in janitorial work preferred for Custodial Maintenance Worker I.
  • Three years of paid experience in janitorial work for Custodial Maintenance Worker II, including experience with carpet cleaning and biohazard cleanup.
  • One year of demonstrated proficiency in performing minor maintenance duties for Custodial Maintenance Worker II.
  • Completion of a janitorial training course may substitute for six months of work experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience operating industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Experience in performing biohazard cleanup.
