About the position

The City of Bellingham is seeking qualified Custodial Maintenance Workers I-II to perform custodial and porter duties in city-maintained buildings. This role involves cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining various facilities, responding to sanitary hazards, and ensuring a safe and clean environment. The position offers opportunities for advancement from Custodial Maintenance Worker I to II based on experience and training.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine custodial tasks such as sanitizing, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.
• Respond to and clean sanitary hazards in city-maintained buildings.
• Operate portable cleaning equipment and maintain cleaning tools and supplies.
• Lock and unlock buildings, securing them when not in use.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and resetting circuit breakers.
• Assist in training lower classified staff as assigned.
• Remove snow or debris from sidewalks and entryways.

Requirements

• Willingness and ability to perform commercial custodial work including cleaning public restrooms and locker rooms.
• Custodial Maintenance Worker I: One year of janitorial work experience preferred.
• Custodial Maintenance Worker II: Three years of paid janitorial work experience, including operating cleaning machines and performing biohazard cleanup.
• Demonstrated proficiency in performing minor maintenance duties for Custodial Maintenance Worker II.

Nice-to-haves

• Completion of a janitorial training course may substitute for six months of work experience.
