About the position

The Custodian/Maintenance Worker at The Roger Bacon Academy plays a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and functional environment for students and staff. This position is essential in supporting the mission of the school, which emphasizes effective communication and expression through the arts and sciences. The Custodian/Maintenance Worker is responsible for a variety of manual activities that include cleaning and maintaining the school buildings, ensuring that all areas are conducive to learning and free from hazards. The role requires adherence to established cleaning schedules and practices, as well as a commitment to the school's priorities of safety, character, and scholarship. In this position, the Custodian/Maintenance Worker will perform a range of duties that include moving and arranging furniture in classrooms and general-purpose rooms, assembling furniture as needed, and assisting with the installation of HVAC units throughout the building. The worker will also be responsible for performing roof repairs to prevent leaks, transporting curriculum orders and classroom supplies, and conducting plumbing repairs such as replacing toilets and urinals. Daily cleaning tasks will include scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, and polishing floors, as well as washing windows, woodwork, walls, and other surfaces. The worker will maintain inventory control of supplies and equipment, replenish restroom and kitchen supplies, and ensure that all trash and debris are cleared from the premises. Additionally, the Custodian/Maintenance Worker will be tasked with general maintenance duties, including making minor repairs to furniture and facilities, reporting damages that require outside attention, and performing routine maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems. The role requires a proactive approach to safety, with the worker expected to record and report hazards and safety issues to the Office Manager and Headmaster. Overall, this position is vital in creating a positive and safe learning environment for students and staff alike.

Responsibilities

  • Moves and arranges furniture for classrooms and general purpose rooms/auditorium.
  • Assembles furniture upon arrival as needed.
  • Assists with installation of HVAC units located throughout the building.
  • Performs roof repairs with appropriate materials to prevent leakage in the building.
  • Transports curriculum orders and classroom supplies to designated locations as needed.
  • Performs plumbing repairs including replacing toilets and urinals.
  • Scrubs, dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, waxes, and polishes floors in rooms, hallways, and closets.
  • Washes windows, woodwork, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Scrubs and cleans restroom fixtures.
  • Maintains inventory, control of supplies, and maintenance of equipment to operate interior maintenance.
  • Replenishes tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, kitchens, and classroom facilities.
  • Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Polices all trash and debris inside and on the grounds.
  • Maintains lawn, flower bed, and external landscaping.
  • Ensures sidewalks and external entrances are clear of debris and safe for students and guests.
  • Maintains general cleanliness and repair of ceilings, windows, walls, floors, and desks.
  • Empties wastebaskets and other refuse receptacles.
  • Locks and unlocks doors and gates.
  • Sorts and stores material for recycling program.
  • Makes minor repairs to furniture or facilities.
  • Reports to supervisor damages or needed repairs requiring outside attention.
  • Turns heating and air conditioning equipment on and off.
  • Performs routine maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Records and reports all hazards and safety issues to be addressed and added to maintenance lists with Office Manager, then Headmaster.

Requirements

  • Knowledgeable of OSHA standards and requirements.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of procedures to operate heating and air conditioning equipment.
  • Skill in the use of small equipment used in routine cleaning and landscaping.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relations.
  • Ability to perform duties without interrupting ongoing classes/teachers unless specified or in an emergency.
  • Able to climb stairs and meet physical demands of the job without the use of an elevator.
  • Able to climb an extension ladder to perform certain job duties.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral or written directions.
  • Physical ability to lift/carry 20 lbs and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
