About the position

The Custodial Squad Leader for the 2nd shift at Dartmouth College plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of various facilities on campus. Under the general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor, this position leads and directs a team of custodial staff while also actively participating in a wide range of cleaning and maintenance tasks. The responsibilities include not only routine cleaning but also event setups and managing pest control measures. The role requires physical stamina as it involves medium to heavy lifting and working in diverse environments, including offices, laboratories, dining areas, and public spaces. The Custodial Squad Leader is expected to implement recycling procedures and ensure that all cleaning tasks meet the high standards set by the department. In addition to leading the team, the Custodial Squad Leader is responsible for creating and scheduling daily and weekly work assignments for custodians, ensuring they have the necessary supplies and equipment to perform their tasks safely. Training staff in the proper use and care of cleaning equipment is a key aspect of this role, as is monitoring ongoing work to ensure it meets departmental standards and customer expectations. The position also involves maintaining an inventory of cleaning materials and equipment, providing daily reports to the custodial supervisor, and addressing any issues that arise during the workday. The work environment can be challenging, requiring the ability to perform tasks in various conditions, including bad weather and potentially hazardous situations. Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct a squad performing cleaning and unskilled building maintenance tasks.
  • Create and schedule daily/weekly work assignments for custodians.
  • Train workers in the proper use, care, and cleaning of equipment.
  • Monitor work in progress to ensure it meets department standards.
  • Maintain an ongoing inventory of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Provide daily account reports to the custodial supervisor.
  • Clean and maintain various facilities including restrooms, laboratories, and dining areas.
  • Set up and break down for College events, arranging tables and chairs as needed.
  • Perform outdoor maintenance tasks such as snow shoveling and litter removal.
  • Implement recycling procedures and manage pest control measures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma plus 1-2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years' experience related to custodial work.
  • Proven ability to lead staff and communicate effectively with diverse customers.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to provide work directions and train others in custodial work.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy industrial cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe use of various cleaning chemicals and insect control methods.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying objects.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of training in Genie Lift, Asbestos Awareness, Hazard Communication, and Blood Borne Pathogens is preferred.
