About the position

The Custodial Substitute position is essential for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of school facilities in the absence of regular custodial staff. This role involves a variety of custodial duties aimed at ensuring that the school environment is safe, clean, and welcoming for students and staff. The Custodial Substitute will be responsible for performing general clean-up tasks across all facilities, which includes sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, polishing, vacuuming, and extracting carpets. The individual will also be tasked with cleaning various areas such as halls, offices, classrooms, restrooms, and lunchrooms, as well as removing trash from both the interior and exterior of the school premises. In addition to routine cleaning, the Custodial Substitute will maintain gymnasium floors, stages, exercise rooms, and lunchrooms. This includes waxing, sealing, and occasionally refinishing different types of flooring within the building. The role requires familiarity with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and adherence to Hazard Communication guidelines, as the individual may encounter biohazard waste during clean-up operations involving human bodily fluids. The position also involves preparing and setting up rooms for special events, meetings, and activities, which includes arranging seating and equipment, and cleaning up afterward. The Custodial Substitute will maintain the school grounds by removing snow and ice, trimming trees and shrubs, mowing lawns, and ensuring that sidewalks and playgrounds are clean and safe. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for operating the irrigation system and performing major cleaning projects, such as scrubbing walls and ceilings, and painting rooms as needed. Security responsibilities include locking and unlocking doors, checking for closed windows, and arming alarms before leaving the building. The Custodial Substitute must also be able to reset safety mechanisms on boilers and chillers in case of failures. Overall, this position requires a reliable individual who can perform essential custodial functions effectively and respond to requests from school administrators and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general clean-up of all facilities including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming.
  • Maintain gymnasium floors, stages, exercise rooms, and lunchrooms.
  • Wax, seal, and occasionally refinish various floor types in the building.
  • Work with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and handle biohazard waste during clean-up.
  • Prepare and set up rooms for special meetings and activities, and clean up afterwards.
  • Maintain school grounds by removing snow, ice, and debris, and performing landscaping tasks.
  • Run the irrigation system and change damaged sprinkler heads.
  • Perform periodic major cleaning projects such as scrubbing walls and painting rooms.
  • Secure the building by locking doors, checking windows, and arming alarms before leaving.
  • Reset safeties on boilers, chillers, and air handlers as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one year of full-time successful experience as a Journeyman Custodian or two years of custodial experience required.
  • Skill in the use of general maintenance hand tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, including HVAC and lighting control systems.
  • Basic communication, reading, and math skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with gas-powered equipment such as snowplows and lawn mowers.
  • Familiarity with bloodborne pathogens and cleaning procedures.
