About the position

The Custodian position at Davidson County Schools involves performing manual labor that encompasses a variety of housekeeping and minor building maintenance tasks. Employees in this role are responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order within the school environment, which includes cleaning floors, windows, and restrooms, as well as performing minor repairs and maintenance tasks. The work requires the use of various tools and light equipment, and employees may be exposed to both indoor and outdoor environments, along with potential hazards such as loud noises, chemicals, and human body fluids, necessitating adherence to OSHA requirements regarding bloodborne pathogens. The position is supervised regularly, with performance evaluated through observation and inspection to ensure thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties. Essential job functions include vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, and cleaning restroom fixtures. Custodians are also responsible for stocking restrooms with necessary paper products and soap, replacing bulbs and fuses, and performing maintenance tasks such as removing debris and cleaning sidewalks. Additionally, custodians are tasked with locking and unlocking buildings, setting up rooms for meetings, moving furniture, and ensuring that heating and air conditioning systems are functioning properly. The role may also involve operating power tools and maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies. Other related duties may be assigned by the Principal as needed. The position requires a high school diploma and the ability to read and write, along with a combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Candidates must also obtain a CDL and Bus License, as the role includes responsibilities as a bus driver for 10 hours weekly. Physical requirements include the ability to perform various operational functions such as climbing, balancing, and lifting, with the capacity to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. The job is classified as full-time, with a starting date available immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans buildings including vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, and cleaning restrooms and fixtures.
  • Stocks restrooms with paper products and soap.
  • Replaces bulbs, fuses, and toilet and sink parts; unstops clogs.
  • Performs maintenance tasks such as removing leaves and debris, cleaning sidewalks, and locking/unlocking buildings.
  • Sets up rooms for meetings and moves furniture as needed.
  • Hauls off trash and ensures heating and air conditioning systems are operating properly.
  • Makes minor repairs to furniture and maintains an inventory of cleaning supplies.
  • Operates power tools including vacuum cleaners and steam cleaners.
  • Performs related tasks and other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and write.
  • Combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Working knowledge of methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in cleaning and maintenance.
  • Ability to work productively without close supervision and respond courteously to citizens.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Required to obtain a CDL and Bus License.
  • High School Diploma.

Nice-to-haves
