About the position

The Custodian position at Hoke County Schools involves performing responsible unskilled work in the care and cleaning of school facilities. The custodian will be responsible for a variety of tasks including general cleaning, groundskeeping, and minor maintenance of the school buildings and surrounding areas. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure that all facilities are kept in excellent condition, which includes sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, and buffing floor surfaces. Additionally, the custodian will clean and disinfect restroom areas, replenish paper supplies, and ensure that all common areas are tidy and sanitary. In addition to cleaning duties, the custodian will also be responsible for maintaining the grounds of the school. This includes mowing and trimming grass, raking leaves, and ensuring that sidewalks and walkways are clear of debris. The custodian will also be tasked with making minor repairs to the building and reporting any major repairs needed to the principal. The role requires the custodian to respond to after-hour emergencies and to maintain a high standard of student conduct while ensuring the safety of students boarding and riding the school bus. The custodian will also be responsible for completing reports related to transportation and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations. This position requires a valid North Carolina Driver's License and the ability to maintain a commercial driver's license with proper endorsements. The custodian must also pass a DOT drug and alcohol test and must not have any DWI convictions. The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift and move objects, work in various environments, and operate machinery and tools safely. The custodian will play a vital role in the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the school, contributing to a positive learning environment for students.

Responsibilities

  • Performs responsible unskilled work in the care and cleaning of school facilities
  • Performs a variety of general and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned buildings and facilities
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces
  • Cleans and disinfects restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary
  • Cleans windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, heating/air vents and light fixtures
  • Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture
  • Empties trash receptacles; gathers and disposes of refuse in on-site dumpsters
  • Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picks up debris, applies de-icing compounds to walkways as necessary
  • Cleans and sanitizes waste baskets
  • Cleans and sanitizes water fountains
  • Raises and lowers flags, as needed
  • Maintains inventory; requisitions and picks up cleaning supplies, as needed
  • Opens buildings at start of workday; securely locks down facility at end of day
  • Washes windows on both the inside and outside
  • Arranges furniture, tables and chairs for meetings and other events
  • Mows and trims grass on campus grounds
  • Trims shrubbery, trees, etc.
  • Rakes and removes leaves as necessary
  • Makes minor building repairs, as able
  • Reports major repairs needed and any damage to school property to principal
  • Responds to after hour emergencies and works over as needed
  • Maintains proficiency in driving skills
  • Is responsible for completing all reports relating to transportation
  • Ensures safety and care of students boarding, riding, and departing school bus
  • Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times
  • Discharges students only at the authorized school or bus stop locations
  • Transports only authorized students
  • Reports infractions of school bus safety rules to the principal or designee
  • Obeys all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus
  • Operates the school bus on the assigned route(s) and schedule as provided by the Transportation Office
  • Attends bus safety meetings
  • Informs Transportation Specialist or TIMS Manager of any students added or deleted from route which may necessitate a change in route or bus stop
  • Accepts responsibility for securing the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route
  • Accepts responsibility for reporting observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus
  • Maintains acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • High School Graduation or its equivalency
  • General knowledge and experience of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and the ability to use them economically and efficiently
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months driving experience
  • Must be eligible to possess and maintain a current North Carolina commercial driver's license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Drivers Pocket Card
  • Must pass a DOT drug and alcohol testing
  • Must never have been convicted of a DWI Offense
