The Custodian/Bus Driver position at Hoke County Schools involves a dual role that encompasses both custodial duties and the operation of a school bus. The individual in this role is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in school facilities while also ensuring the safe transportation of students. This position requires a high school diploma or GED, along with a valid North Carolina Driver's License and the ability to obtain a commercial driver's license with the necessary endorsements. The role is essential for the upkeep of the school environment and the safety of students during transit. In terms of custodial responsibilities, the employee will perform a variety of cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and disinfecting various areas within the school. This includes maintaining restrooms, classrooms, and common areas, as well as performing light groundskeeping tasks such as mowing and trimming grass, and picking up debris. The custodian will also be responsible for inventory management of cleaning supplies and ensuring that all areas are kept in a sanitary condition. As a bus driver, the individual will operate a school bus on designated routes, ensuring the safety and well-being of students while they are being transported. This includes maintaining a high standard of student conduct, adhering to traffic laws, and reporting any safety infractions. The bus driver will also be responsible for conducting pre-trip inspections of the bus and reporting any mechanical issues to the appropriate personnel. The role requires a commitment to safety and the ability to respond to emergencies as they arise, ensuring that students are discharged only at authorized locations. Overall, this position is vital for the smooth operation of Hoke County Schools, contributing to both the cleanliness of the facilities and the safe transportation of students.

Responsibilities

  • Perform responsible unskilled work in the care and cleaning of school facilities.
  • Conduct general and light groundskeeping work in the maintenance of assigned buildings and facilities.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax, and buff floor surfaces.
  • Clean and disinfect restroom areas and replenish paper supplies and soap as necessary.
  • Clean windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, heating/air vents, and light fixtures.
  • Dust and clean desks and other furniture.
  • Empty trash receptacles; gather and dispose of refuse in on-site dumpsters.
  • Sweep sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; police grounds, pick up debris, and apply de-icing compounds to walkways as necessary.
  • Clean and sanitize waste baskets and water fountains.
  • Raise and lower flags as needed.
  • Maintain inventory; requisition and pick up cleaning supplies as needed.
  • Open buildings at the start of the workday; securely lock down facility at the end of the day.
  • Wash windows on both the inside and outside.
  • Arrange furniture, tables, and chairs for meetings and other events.
  • Mow and trim grass on campus grounds; trim shrubbery and trees as necessary.
  • Rake and remove leaves as necessary.
  • Make minor building repairs as able and report major repairs needed to the principal.
  • Respond to after-hour emergencies and work overtime as needed.
  • Maintain proficiency in driving skills and complete all reports relating to transportation.
  • Ensure safety and care of students boarding, riding, and departing the school bus.
  • Maintain a high standard of student conduct at all times.
  • Discharge students only at authorized school or bus stop locations.
  • Transport only authorized students and report infractions of school bus safety rules to the principal or designee.
  • Obey all traffic laws and school bus regulations while operating the school bus.
  • Operate the school bus on assigned routes and schedules as provided by the Transportation Office.
  • Attend bus safety meetings and inform the Transportation Specialist or TIMS Manager of any changes in student routes or bus stops.
  • Secure the school bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route.
  • Report observable mechanical defects or failures on the school bus.
  • Maintain acceptable relations with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel.

Requirements

  • High School Graduation or its equivalency.
  • General knowledge and experience of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months driving experience.
  • Must be eligible to possess and maintain a current North Carolina commercial driver's license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Drivers Pocket Card.
  • Must pass a DOT drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must never have been convicted of a DWI Offense.
