About the position

The Custodian/Housekeeper (Part-Time) position at Kentucky State University is responsible for maintaining a clean, healthy, and safe environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. The role involves routine cleaning and maintenance of university buildings, utilizing environmentally friendly products, and ensuring workplace safety and environmental practices are upheld.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Empty trash receptacles and bag trash for proper disposal.
  • Change light bulbs as directed.
  • Lock doors after cleaning areas.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Clean assigned areas by washing furnishings, windows, tiles, fixtures, equipment, and floors.
  • Vacuum, dust, and polish specified areas and/or furnishings; sanitize and disinfect bathrooms.
  • Restock paper and soap supplies.
  • Gather and transport refuse from assigned areas to appropriate disposal locations.
  • Inspect physical condition of assigned areas; submit requests to appropriate personnel regarding repairs, replacements, furnishings, and relocation of equipment.
  • Request cleaning materials and supplies from designated areas; mix cleaning solutions according to specifications, load and transport service cart with required materials and supplies to designated work areas.
  • Operate standard cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, and mops.
  • Staff events as needed.
  • Use and maintain equipment properly.
  • Report safety hazards as appropriate.
  • Replenish supplies.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of common cleaning practices and standards; exposure to common cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time, and coordinate multiple assignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, product label instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate with professionalism.
  • Comfortable working in environments where the temperature may be cold or hot.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience in housekeeping is acceptable; however, a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Good customer service skills.
