About the position

The Custodian position at the Adult Transition Program - North / James Lick High School involves performing routine cleaning and custodial functions at assigned school sites or facilities. The role is essential in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the school environment, which directly impacts the students and staff. Employees in this classification report to the head custodian and work under general supervision, adhering to well-defined policies and procedures. The custodian is responsible for ensuring that all assigned areas are kept clean and orderly, which includes a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall maintenance of the school facilities. Typical duties include cleaning classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, offices, and other related facilities. The custodian will sweep, mop, strip, scrub, wax, and polish various types of floors, including concrete, linoleum, tile, and wood. Additionally, the role requires vacuuming and shampooing rugs and carpets, dusting furniture, and emptying and cleaning trash receptacles. The custodian will also be responsible for cleaning walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, chalkboards, lockers, and other equipment, as well as painting over graffiti when necessary. The position also involves ensuring the security of assigned areas by locking and unlocking doors, windows, and gates, and turning security alarms on and off. The custodian may assist in setting up and arranging furniture and facilities for assemblies, athletic events, meetings, and special events upon request. Observing and reporting maintenance repair needs to the appropriate authority is also a critical part of the job. In case of emergencies, the custodian will respond to cleanups such as spills and clogged drains, and may perform minor maintenance and repairs on buildings, fixtures, and equipment. The role may also include picking up and delivering parcels, food, and supplies as assigned, along with performing related duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine janitorial and custodial functions at assigned site(s) or facilities.
  • Clean classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, cafeteria, gymnasiums, offices, and related facilities.
  • Sweep, mop, strip, scrub, wax, and polish concrete, linoleum, tile, and wood floors.
  • Vacuum and shampoo rugs and carpets.
  • Dust furniture; empty and clean trash receptacles.
  • Clean walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, chalkboards, lockers, and other equipment; paint over graffiti.
  • Clean door and window glass and drinking fountains.
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Pick up papers and debris; clean walkways and entrances.
  • Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, scrubbers, etc.
  • Ensure security of assigned area; lock and unlock doors, windows, and gates; turn security alarms on/off.
  • Assist in the setup and arrangement of furniture and facilities for assemblies, athletic events, meetings, and special events upon request.
  • Observe and report the need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority.
  • Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills and clogged drains.
  • Perform minor maintenance, repair, and adjustments to buildings, fixtures, carpet, and equipment.
  • Pick up/deliver parcels, food, and supplies as assigned.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
  • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in janitorial and custodial work.
  • Ability to read at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to safely use and apply custodial cleaning agents, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance and repair work on buildings, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
