The Custodian at Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the library facilities. This part-time role involves regular cleaning activities, light maintenance, and supporting the library's mission and community engagement. The position requires collaboration with the Custodial Supervisor and Facilities & Maintenance Team to ensure a welcoming environment for library patrons.

  • Sweep, mop, dust mop, and vacuum floors and entrance rugs.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins, and remove materials to recycling sites.
  • Clean floors, walls, lavatories, fixtures, and refill bathroom supplies.
  • Clean Annex/Clinic rooms and maintain cleanliness of library vehicles.
  • Dust, wipe, and sanitize furniture and surfaces, including windowsills and blinds.
  • Clean windows, doors, and elevator doors.
  • Sanitize counters and tables in the eating area, load and unload the dishwasher, and arrange dishware.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as minor repairs and light bulb replacement.
  • Assist Library Courier with loading, unloading, and distributing library materials.
  • Set up and tear down meeting rooms as needed.
  • Perform snow removal and other inclement weather activities.
  • Maintain basic janitorial supplies and communicate needs to the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Participate in special projects or other duties as assigned.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1+ years' experience with commercial cleaning equipment.
  • 1+ years' experience with standard janitorial or maintenance equipment.
  • Reliable and timely transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force regularly, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 100 pounds of force occasionally.
  • 1+ years' experience working with cleaning chemicals.
  • 1+ years' experience in a public library setting.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and deal with problems involving several concrete variables.
  • A continuous learner with a welcoming attitude and collaborative work ethic.
