About the position

The Custodian at the Rakow Center plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the facility under the guidance of the Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor. This position involves a variety of routine and repetitive cleaning and maintenance tasks, making it essential for the custodian to be diligent and detail-oriented. The custodian is responsible for performing semi-skilled manual labor, which includes not only cleaning but also minor maintenance work. The role may involve supervising part-time custodial personnel, ensuring that all cleaning tasks are completed to the highest standards. Work performance is regularly reviewed through inspections, emphasizing the importance of quality in every task undertaken. In terms of general operations, the custodian will engage in a range of activities including sweeping, mopping, washing, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing floors, both by hand and using machines. Additional responsibilities include dusting and polishing furniture, washing windows, and performing minor repairs and painting tasks. The custodian will also be responsible for moving furniture and equipment, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, and maintaining the outdoor premises, including snow removal and salting sidewalks. Operating mechanical equipment such as buffers and scrubbers is also part of the job, along with collecting trash and replacing lightbulbs. The custodian will set up and take down rooms for classes or rentals, lock and unlock doors, and assist in supervising special projects and labor crews. Communication and customer service are key components of this role. The custodian is expected to embody the Dundee Township Park District's mission, fostering positive relationships with coworkers and promoting a high morale environment. They will also be responsible for sharing important information with staff, soliciting feedback, and making recommendations for improvements. Safety is paramount, and the custodian must maintain a thorough understanding of safety rules, report accidents, and participate in safety programs. A first aid/CPR certificate is recommended for this position, highlighting the importance of safety and risk management in the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance functions under the direction of the Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Lead and participate in sweeping, mopping, washing, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing floors.
  • Dust and polish furniture and woodwork, wash windows, screens, sills, and doors.
  • Perform minor building maintenance repairs and painting.
  • Move furniture, supplies, and equipment manually or using a hand truck.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, dust, and vacuum rooms.
  • Shovel snow, spread salt, and maintain sidewalks.
  • Operate mechanical equipment such as buffers and scrubbers.
  • Collect trash, dispose of waste, and replace lightbulbs.
  • Perform routine building repairs requiring limited special skills in electric, plumbing, and woodwork.
  • Set up and take down rooms for class programs or rentals.
  • Lock and unlock doors and windows, activate/deactivate building alarms.
  • Supervise special projects and labor crews.
  • Assist Custodial Supervisor in staff training.
  • Comply with all safety and loss prevention policies and use required Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Graduation from a standard high school is required.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in facility cleaning maintenance work is necessary.
  • Ability to operate vacuums, buffers, floor machines, carpet cleaners, and various other equipment used in facility cleaning and maintenance is required.
  • Leadership capabilities are necessary.
