About the position

The custodian at Randall Oaks Recreation Center plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the facility. Working under the direction of the Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor, the custodian is responsible for performing routine and repetitive cleaning and maintenance tasks. This position is classified as semi-skilled manual labor, which may also involve supervising part-time custodial personnel. The work performed is subject to review through inspections of the results obtained, ensuring that high standards of cleanliness and maintenance are upheld. In terms of general operations, the custodian will engage in a variety of cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, washing, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing floors, both by hand and using machines. Additional responsibilities include dusting and polishing furniture, washing windows, and performing minor building maintenance repairs and painting. The custodian will also be responsible for moving furniture and supplies, cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, and maintaining the outside premises, including snow removal and salting sidewalks. The custodian will operate mechanical equipment such as buffers and scrubbers, collect trash, dispose of waste, and replace lightbulbs. They will also perform routine building repairs that require limited special skills in areas such as electrical work, plumbing, and woodwork, while reporting any significant repair needs to the supervisor. The custodian will set up and take down rooms for classes or rentals when an attendant is not scheduled, and will lock and unlock doors and windows, as well as manage building alarms. In addition to cleaning and maintenance duties, the custodian will supervise special projects and labor crews, assist the Custodial Supervisor in staff training, and ensure compliance with safety and loss prevention policies. The custodian is expected to communicate effectively with staff and patrons, maintain a positive working relationship with coworkers, and demonstrate commitment to the organization's values. They will also be responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment, reporting any unsafe conditions, and attending required safety meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance functions under the direction of the Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Engage in sweeping, mopping, washing, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing floors by hand or machine.
  • Dust and polish furniture and woodwork, wash windows, screens, sills, woodwork, doors, walls, and ceilings.
  • Perform minor building maintenance repairs and painting as needed.
  • Move furniture, supplies, and equipment manually or using a hand truck.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, dust, and vacuum rooms.
  • Shovel snow, spread salt, and maintain sidewalks to keep outside premises orderly.
  • Operate mechanical equipment such as buffers and scrubbers for cleaning tasks.
  • Collect trash, dispose of waste, and replace lightbulbs as necessary.
  • Perform routine building repairs requiring limited special skills in electric, plumbing, woodwork, and other mechanical issues.
  • Report other needed repairs to the supervisor.
  • Set up and take down rooms for class programs or rentals when an attendant is not scheduled.
  • Lock and unlock doors and windows and manage building alarms.
  • Supervise special projects and labor crews as assigned.
  • Assist the Custodial Supervisor in staff training and development.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Graduation from a standard high school is required.
  • Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in facility cleaning maintenance work is necessary.
  • Ability to operate vacuums, buffers, floor machines, carpet cleaners, and various other equipment used in facility cleaning and maintenance is required.
  • Leadership capabilities are essential.

  • First aid/CPR certificate is recommended.
