About the position

The Junior Building Custodian is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the school building and surrounding grounds under the direction of the Senior Custodian. This role includes assuming charge of the building in the absence of the Senior Custodian, performing various custodial tasks, and ensuring the safety and security of the premises.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular cleaning duties including floors, walls, windows, toilets, and furniture.
  • Assume responsibility for the building and supervision of custodial staff in the absence of the Senior Custodian.
  • Be available for overtime, emergency callbacks, and building inspections.
  • Participate in daily cleaning tasks such as shampooing carpets and stripping, waxing, and buffing floors.
  • Perform heavy manual labor including climbing ladders, emptying trash, and shoveling snow.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment as assigned.
  • Prepare the building for scheduled events and approved permits.
  • Provide quality customer service for building users.
  • Limit access to the building to authorized personnel.
  • Lock doors, close windows, and activate security alarms.
  • Report vandalism and building damage to a supervisor.
  • Perform minor upkeep such as changing light bulbs and replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Keep grounds and entranceways free from litter and debris.
  • Perform routine maintenance on machinery and equipment.
  • Comply with energy conservation measures and ensure mechanisms are activated and monitored.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with school staff and the public.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use a computer.
  • Demonstrates effective and reliable work habits.
  • Possess a valid MA ID and reliable transportation.
  • Must be a City of Springfield resident.

Nice-to-haves

  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Aquatics Facility Operator Certification if the school has a pool.
