About the position

The Custodian, Substitute position at Tri-Valley Opportunity Council, Inc. is primarily responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the Head Start facility. This role involves a variety of custodial duties, including cleaning, disinfecting, and ensuring that the facility is properly maintained. The custodian will assist local personnel in setting up and breaking down the facility, which includes carrying, loading, and unloading materials. The position is essential in creating a safe and welcoming environment for children and families enrolled in the Head Start program. The custodian will also play a role in recruiting potential parents by providing them with information about the various program services and benefits offered to enrolled children and families. In addition to routine cleaning tasks such as dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning restrooms, the custodian will be responsible for restocking supplies, emptying trash receptacles, and recycling materials as needed. The role may also involve minor maintenance tasks, such as replacing light bulbs and adjusting furniture, as well as limited grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and snow removal. The custodian will operate basic tools and equipment used in routine maintenance and will assist in the overall operation of the Head Start center by bringing necessary materials to classrooms and offices, as well as assisting with deliveries and storage of materials. Safety compliance is a critical aspect of this position. The custodian must complete safety awareness training specific to the role and follow precautionary measures to prevent injury and illness. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and adhering to safety protocols when operating equipment around children and staff. The custodian is also required to obtain First Aid and CPR certification within 30 days of hire and maintain this certification throughout their employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the setting up of the Head Start Center.
  • Participates in orientation and training.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports center materials.
  • Performs general, routine custodial duties, including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, shampooing carpets, cleaning restrooms, washing windows, and restocking supplies.
  • Cleans materials in the Head Start Center.
  • Empties trash receptacles and disposes of trash properly.
  • Recycles materials as needed.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • May assist with minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and adjusting furniture.
  • Performs limited grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, and snow removal.
  • Operates basic tools and equipment used in routine maintenance.
  • Assists in the operation of the Head Start center by bringing necessary materials to classrooms and offices.
  • Assists in the storage of infant and toddler seats and in ordering and receiving deliveries.
  • Unlocks and locks doors, ensuring security after cleaning areas.
  • Reports needs and concerns to the Head Start Center Manager regarding operations.
  • Boxes and stores center materials and performs other closing tasks as required.
  • Completes safety awareness training and follows safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age; candidates are strongly encouraged to obtain their high school diploma or GED.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning tools and substances.
