About the position

The Custodian position at Hastings Public Schools is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the school environment, ensuring a safe and welcoming atmosphere for students and staff. This full-time role involves various cleaning tasks, including sanitizing restrooms, classrooms, and common areas, as well as assisting with building maintenance and setup for school activities.

Responsibilities

• Sanitizes and cleans restrooms according to assignments and cleaning schedules.
• Cleans and sanitizes sinks, countertops, door handles, faucets, and toilet flush handles.
• Cleans mirrors and window ledges, and scrubs restroom floors.
• Refills paper goods and soap dispensers, and provides cleaning services for classrooms, offices, and cafeterias.
• Sweeps, vacuums, or mops floors and hallways daily.
• Empties waste baskets and recycle baskets, and collects trash including milk cartons.
• Cleans glass windows on doors and disinfects spills and stains as required.
• Secures and/or opens the building, shuts off lights, and locks doors as assigned.
• Assists with the setup and takedown of equipment for school activities and events.
• Participates in extensive summer cleaning schedules and projects in preparation for the new school year.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED
• Ability to perform essential job functions
• Effective interpersonal and grooming skills
• Ability to lift 55 pounds to shoulder height occasionally
• Ability to push/pull a minimum of 20 pounds frequently
• Special Class Boilers license preferred or must be obtained within 9 months of hire.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in custodial work
• Ability to obtain a Special Engineer's License within the first 9 months of employment.
