About the position

The Custodian position at the City of Thornton involves maintaining and cleaning city buildings and facilities under general supervision. The role requires performing a variety of custodial duties, ensuring cleanliness and safety in the work environment, and may include leading seasonal or temporary help. Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of custodial duties following prescribed operational and safety procedures.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip, and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets and chairs.
  • Clean and sanitize restroom facilities and fixtures; replenish restroom supplies.
  • Dust and polish furniture, woodwork, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Empty, clean, and sanitize waste receptacles; remove debris.
  • Wash windows, mirrors, and walls; replace lights and adjust shades and blinds.
  • Clean air vents and identify building maintenance needs.
  • Remove snow and ice on city facility walkways.
  • Move and arrange furniture and equipment.
  • Prepare rooms for conferences and meetings; monitor buildings during meetings and secure afterwards.
  • Unlock and lock buildings at the start and end of the business day.
  • Raise, lower, fold, and store flags.
  • Receive and report on inquiries from the public or custodial service complaints.
  • Travel to various city buildings and facilities to perform work as needed.
  • Serve as a lead worker for seasonal or temporary help if required.
  • Work overtime and varying schedules as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Six months of custodial experience.
  • Previous experience with floor and carpet maintenance, use of power cleaning equipment, and cleaning chemical use and safety preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
  • Knowledge of general practices and methods of custodial maintenance.
  • Knowledge of custodial maintenance safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of chemicals used in cleaning.
  • Knowledge of carpet and floor maintenance for a wide variety of flooring surfaces.
