The Custodian position within the Facility Services Department involves performing routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the custodial care of various buildings. Employees in this role are responsible for a variety of custodial and maintenance tasks that require the use of various tools and light equipment. The work includes cleaning floors, windows, and bathrooms, as well as replacing simple light bulbs and paper supplies. Additionally, custodians are tasked with building security and routine grounds maintenance. The role requires working in both indoor and outdoor environments, exposing employees to various hazards such as loud noises, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, and human body fluids, necessitating adherence to OSHA requirements regarding bloodborne pathogens. The work is performed under regular supervision, with evaluations based on thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties. Essential duties include cleaning buildings by vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting furniture, and maintaining restrooms and restroom fixtures. Custodians are also responsible for stocking restrooms with paper products, cleaning window blinds and sills, and performing maintenance tasks such as sweeping sidewalks and parking lots. They may also lock and unlock buildings, set up rooms for meetings, and haul off trash. Additional responsibilities include operating and cleaning county vehicles, maintaining a ready stock of janitorial supplies, and keeping simple records of work activities. The position may also involve supervising community service workers and performing related tasks as required.
