About the position

The Custodian position at Mary McPherson Elementary involves performing routine custodial work in school facilities, including cleaning, maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks. The role requires working under the supervision of the Head Custodian or Night Supervisor and involves collaboration with the building principal and teachers to maintain a clean and safe environment for students and staff. The custodian will utilize various cleaning equipment and chemicals, and may also be involved in minor maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Sweep and mop floors in various areas including restrooms, classrooms, and hallways.
• Vacuum carpeted floors and perform regular maintenance such as stripping and waxing floors.
• Dust and wipe off surfaces including chalkboards and whiteboards.
• Clean and sanitize restroom areas, including toilets and sinks.
• Maintain supply levels in restrooms and clean trash containers.
• Wash walls, windows, and surface areas as needed.
• Clean light fixtures and replace bulbs.
• Dust and clean air vents and change air filters.
• Spot clean carpets and remove graffiti as needed.
• Maintain custodial equipment and inventory of cleaning supplies.
• Assist in moving and setting up furniture and equipment for events.
• Maintain grounds by picking up litter, mowing grass, and weeding planting areas.
• Perform snow removal duties and maintain building security by locking and unlocking facilities.
• Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and minor plumbing repairs.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalency.
• One year of custodial experience preferred or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and tools for public buildings.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and observe department policies.
• Ability to operate and maintain custodial and groundskeeping equipment.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with powered custodial equipment such as vacuums and buffers.
• Familiarity with safety procedures when cleaning and moving furniture.
