About the position

The Custodian position at Navajo County involves performing routine custodial duties under direct supervision to maintain cleanliness and order in County facilities. This role is essential for ensuring that all assigned offices and buildings are kept in a clean and sanitary condition. The custodian will be responsible for a variety of tasks including picking up and emptying trash, vacuuming, cleaning, and maintaining the facilities. The position requires the individual to identify and report any repair needs, as well as perform minor repairs as necessary. In addition to cleaning duties, the custodian will operate and maintain vehicles assigned to them, ensuring that they are in good working condition by checking oil, fluids, and air pressure. The role also includes cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and other common areas, handling spills, and properly disposing of soiled materials. The custodian will utilize various cleaning equipment such as vacuums, buffers, and mops to ensure that floors and surfaces are well-maintained. The custodian will also be responsible for stocking supplies in restrooms, changing light bulbs, and ordering cleaning supplies and equipment as needed. This position may require working outdoors in varying weather conditions and maintaining current MSDS sheets. Additionally, the custodian may act as a lead custodian, which includes creating work schedules and assigning tasks to other custodians. Effective communication and the ability to establish good working relationships with colleagues and the public are essential skills for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Picks up and empties trash, vacuums, cleans, and maintains assigned County offices and buildings.
  • Identifies and reports repair needs.
  • Makes minor repairs.
  • Operates and maintains vehicles assigned by checking oil, fluids, and air pressure.
  • Cleans and disinfects toilets, sinks, mirrors, hand plates, dispensers, fountains, glass doors and windows according to prescribed methods.
  • Cleans up spills as needed; disposes of soiled materials properly.
  • Operates vacuums, buffers, shop vacs, sweepers, and utilizes mops, brooms, and waxing equipment to clean floors.
  • Empties trash receptacles and washes them when soiled; relines receptacles with bags as needed.
  • Recycles cardboard and paper.
  • Stocks paper in restrooms; fills soap dispensers.
  • Dusts high and low levels of all building furniture and fixtures.
  • Changes light bulbs, light tubes and ballasts.
  • Orders supplies, chemicals and cleaning equipment.
  • Works outdoors under varying weather conditions.
  • Maintains MSDS sheets, keeping them current and up to date.
  • Locks and secures building in order to allow only authorized individuals in the buildings.
  • May act as lead custodian; may also make out work schedules and assign tasks to other custodians and counsels other custodians when necessary.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of procedures, materials and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and required preventative measures.
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment operations, simple repairs and replacement of used parts and supplies.
  • Skill in maintaining safety standards.
  • Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
  • Skill to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public.
  • Must have current, valid AZ Drivers License.
