About the position

The position involves providing public service at the library's circulation area, which includes registering and issuing library cards, checking out materials, and resolving customer account issues. The role requires handling payments for fines and fees, processing holds, and performing various clerical tasks to support library operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide public service at the Circulation Desk in person and on the phone.
  • Collect payments for fines, fees, book sale items, and supplies.
  • Resolve customer account problems, including waiving or negotiating payment of charges as appropriate.
  • Check library materials in and out, place holds, renew items, and search for and retrieve materials.
  • Assist and train customers in operating library equipment and troubleshoot basic equipment malfunctions.
  • Review library card applications, verify eligibility and identification, and issue or update library cards.
  • Provide information about borrowing policies, library services, and programs.
  • Fill and process hold requests.
  • Use PC and specialized software, payment transaction systems, and other library equipment such as self-check machines, laser printers, and copiers.
  • Perform assigned support tasks, including sorting, shelving, and other clerical duties.

Requirements

  • One year of related work experience in customer service.
  • Must successfully complete the Library Software and cash handling procedures training within 60 days of hire date.
  • Must pass a required background investigation.
