About the position

The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is seeking a dedicated Cyber Security Analyst to join its Information Technology Unit. This role is crucial in implementing, monitoring, and maintaining robust cyber security programs that protect not only OCDE but also the 28 school districts within Orange County. The selected candidate will be responsible for investigating, assessing, and documenting cybersecurity events and incidents, ensuring that critical systems and digital assets are identified and secured. The Cyber Security Analyst will play a key role in maintaining cyber attack mitigation strategies and incident response capabilities, operating security monitoring systems, and assisting in coordinated responses to cyber incidents, attacks, intrusions, vulnerabilities, and risks. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Cyber Security Analyst will develop and facilitate user training programs for OCDE and school district personnel, enhancing the overall cybersecurity awareness and preparedness of staff. A strong understanding of cyber defense methodologies, technologies, and toolsets is essential for this position. Familiarity with firewalls, proxies, Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, antivirus solutions, Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPS), as well as knowledge of CIS Controls or NIST frameworks, and penetration testing techniques will be critical for success in this role. The Cyber Security Analyst will be expected to stay current with the latest trends and developments in the cybersecurity field, ensuring that OCDE remains at the forefront of cyber defense strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, monitor, and maintain cyber security programs for OCDE and 28 Orange County school districts.
  • Investigate, assess, and document cybersecurity events and incidents.
  • Identify and address critical systems and digital assets for OCDE and its customers.
  • Maintain cyber attack mitigation and incident response capabilities.
  • Operate security monitoring systems and assist in coordinated cyber incident responses.
  • Address attacks, intrusions, vulnerabilities, and risks effectively.
  • Develop and facilitate user training programs for OCDE and school district personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university with major course work in information security or a related field.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in information security technology, specifically with penetration testing, intrusion, incident response, or digital forensics.
