About the position

The City of Durham is seeking a dedicated Cyber Security Analyst to join its nationally recognized Technology Solutions Department. This full-time position offers a competitive salary range of $71,624 to $111,014 and is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a difference in the community while advancing their careers. The Cyber Security Analyst will play a crucial role in assisting the Senior Cyber Security Analyst in the daily management of the City's cyber security program. This includes conducting security assessments of various systems to identify vulnerabilities, providing actionable recommendations for remediation, and supporting system owners in implementing effective safeguards to protect sensitive information. In this role, the Cyber Security Analyst will be responsible for validating that security controls are appropriately risk-rated and that risk statements clearly articulate the potential business impact on the judiciary in the event of a security breach. The position allows for teleworking, although some assignments may require on-site work at different City buildings and locations. The Cyber Security Analyst will collaborate closely with the Technology Solutions staff and the Senior Cyber Security Analyst on various tasks, including performing system hardening to prevent unauthorized access, monitoring the City's systems and end-user activities from an information security perspective, and providing end-user security awareness training to employees. Additionally, the analyst will be responsible for correlating and analyzing logs to detect potential information security breaches, generating cyber security reports, resolving cyber security tickets and issues promptly, and utilizing security tools to assist end users. The role also involves contributing innovative ideas to enhance the Cyber Security program and creating and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures and other relevant documents.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Senior Cyber Security Analyst in managing the City's cyber security program.
  • Conduct security assessments of systems to identify vulnerabilities and provide remediation recommendations.
  • Support system owners in implementing effective safeguards against cyber threats.
  • Validate that security controls are risk-rated and articulate the business impact of potential deficiencies.
  • Perform system hardening to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Monitor the City's systems and end-user activities for security breaches.
  • Provide end-user security awareness training to employees.
  • Correlate and analyze logs to detect potential information security breaches.
  • Generate cyber security reports and resolve cyber security tickets in a timely manner.
  • Utilize security tools to assist end users with their issues.
  • Contribute innovative ideas to improve the Cyber Security program.
  • Create and review Standard Operating Procedures and other cyber security documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a directly related field.
  • Five years of professional information technology experience in a relevant area.
