About the position

The Associate Cybersecurity Analyst position at the University System of Georgia (USG) is an entry-level role designed for individuals who are eager to develop their skills in cybersecurity. This role is situated within the USG Enterprise Cybersecurity Operations Center in Athens, Georgia, where the primary focus is on ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of USG enterprise information and information systems. The Associate Cybersecurity Analyst will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to identify risks to information system assets, working under the guidance of a supervisor. This position is crucial in supporting the cybersecurity framework of the University System, which represents USG to various stakeholders, including government entities and private industry, on security-related matters. In this role, the Associate Cybersecurity Analyst will engage in daily cybersecurity operations, assisting with systems management issues, performing risk assessments, and monitoring firewalls and other defensive measures. The individual will also be responsible for routine incident response and will have the opportunity to develop a mastery of cybersecurity skills and procedures. Participation in USG-wide cybersecurity activities, including planning and executing meetings, is expected, along with occasional overnight travel for training or conferences. The position requires excellent communication skills to effectively interact with both technical and non-technical colleagues across the University System of Georgia. The Associate Cybersecurity Analyst will play a vital role in collecting and processing threat intelligence from various sources, contributing to the management of both current and emerging cyber threats. Responsibilities

  • Assists and documents daily cybersecurity operations.
  • Assists with systems management issues.
  • Assists performing risk assessments and testing of information systems.
  • Monitors firewalls and other defensive cybersecurity measures.
  • Performs routine incident response using approved USG service ticketing system.
  • Develops a mastery of cybersecurity skills and procedures.
  • Participates in USG-wide cybersecurity activities, including planning and executing cybersecurity meetings.
  • Participates in occasional overnight travel, typically to attend training or conferences.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in computer science or a related field is required. Significant relevant experience in conjunction with an associate degree may be considered.
  • One or more years of related experience is required. Relevant education may substitute for some experience.
  • Candidates with specialized knowledge in information security, cybersecurity, information assurance, or risk management, obtained through experience or a formal training program are highly desired.
  • Associate Cybersecurity Analysts are expected to possess or immediately obtain a professional certification, such as A+, Security+, SSCP or GCIA.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to work with multiple modern operating systems efficiently.
  • Functional competency in scripting languages such as VBScript, PHP, Perl, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, and experience with Linux/Unix shells is a plus.
  • Experience with security information and event monitoring software.
  • Intangible qualities for cybersecurity analysts include creativity, ingenuity, determination, leadership, and excellent interpersonal skills.
