About the position

The Cybersecurity Engineer (Threat Monitoring and Vulnerability Management Lead) at the University of Illinois Chicago will lead the university's vulnerability management program, providing technical expertise to secure IT systems and mitigate risks. This role involves collaboration with internal and external teams to identify, assess, and remediate vulnerabilities while delivering Tier 2 technical support for system patches and security tool optimization. The engineer will stay updated on emerging threats, conduct technical assessments, and contribute to the overall security posture of the university.

Responsibilities

  • Lead vulnerability management program for internal and external stakeholders
  • Assist with evaluating security threats and indicators of compromise
  • Provide tier 2 technical support to campus IT liaisons to patch and reconfigure systems to remediate or mitigate vulnerabilities and manage risk
  • Provide tier 2 technical support to campus IT liaisons so that they can take full advantage of our suite of security tools, including researching solutions and providing hands-on support
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned
  • Remain abreast of cybersecurity news, industry trends, and best practices, offering informed recommendations for improvements and optimizations aligned with the organization's goals
  • Participate in technical security assessments of university IT infrastructure and third-party services or products

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or closely related field of study
  • Minimum of 6 years of professional IT experience which includes 2 years' experience at a supervisory or lead worker capacity
  • Demonstrated experience within IS Security including assessing, monitoring, maintaining, and evaluating information security policies and systems
  • Demonstrated experience running vulnerability management programs including scanning, patching, and training

Nice-to-haves

  • General knowledge of Networking, Windows Server, and/or Linux
  • Strong understanding of IT administration and troubleshooting skills with a focus on cybersecurity principles and practices
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication (verbal and written) and collaboration skills
