About the position

The University of Maine System (UMS) is seeking a detail-oriented Cybersecurity Engineer to ensure the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of critical data and systems. This role involves safeguarding the university's digital ecosystem while collaborating with a dynamic team of cybersecurity experts and institutional partners.

Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain critical network security devices such as firewalls, IDS/IPS, and VPN gateways.
  • Implement and monitor zero-trust security policies, ensuring secure access to university systems and resources.
  • Perform risk assessments, threat modeling, and vulnerability analyses to fortify systems.
  • Collaborate on cybersecurity automation, software enhancements, and architecture reviews.
  • Conduct regular security assessments, penetration testing, and audits to maintain compliance.
  • Respond to cybersecurity events, analyze incidents, and deploy innovative solutions to prevent future threats.
  • Provide expertise in forensic analysis and train team members to act as first responders during security events.
  • Design and evaluate robust security practices for data centers and enterprise applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three to five years of experience supporting a network environment, working with routing, TCP/IP, Internet/Intranet, network security/firewalls and encryption, vulnerability management, and a variety of operating systems.
  • Experience with SIEM platforms and network monitoring tools.
  • Experience with the operation of site-to-site and client VPN services, IDS/IPS systems, and next-generation firewalls.
  • Experience in network penetration testing, application vulnerability assessment, risk analysis, and compliance testing.
  • Knowledge of system management disciplines such as security architecture, disaster recovery, and network intrusion response and documentation coordination.
  • Knowledge of current cybersecurity issues and technology developments and trends.
  • Knowledge of the nature and sources of cybersecurity threats, methodologies, and technical requirements for devising solutions.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation and consultation skills.
