About the position

The Cybersecurity Engineer position at Augusta University is a critical role responsible for supporting the institution, including AU Health and its affiliates, in the realm of cybersecurity. This position focuses on safeguarding the organization's networks, systems, and sensitive data. The Cybersecurity Engineer will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and supporting Enterprise Security tools and programs, particularly with an emphasis on networking infrastructure. This role requires providing technical guidance and hands-on engineering to ensure that security tools are effectively implemented to meet security objectives. As a Network Security Subject Matter Expert (SME), the Cybersecurity Engineer will actively participate in the design and build of IT projects, steering network configurations and services such as Network Access Control, Network Authentication, routing and switching, firewalls, segmentation, and overall network architecture towards industry-leading security standards. In addition to design and implementation responsibilities, the Cybersecurity Engineer will provide daily oversight of network security tools and their operations. This includes assessing the security impact of proposed modifications, additions, and technology refresh operations. The role also involves performing investigative research and analysis to troubleshoot, identify, resolve, and report complex security issues. The Cybersecurity Engineer will work closely with other team members and management to ensure that security protocols are adhered to and that incidents are documented and reported appropriately. This position is essential for maintaining the integrity and security of Augusta University's IT infrastructure, which supports a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist networking engineers in the design and implementation of network gear, protocols, routes, and firewall rules, ensuring the environment is reliable without compromising security.
  • Provide complete engineering, installation, and maintenance of security applications and solutions as they pertain to network security and monitoring.
  • Develop, review, monitor, and assist in the enforcement of networking standards.
  • Perform network security monitoring, security event triage, and incident response, coordinating with other team members and management to document and report incidents.
  • Assist in troubleshooting problems for security systems and assist other teams in troubleshooting.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field with a minimum of 2 years of related experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
  • Knowledge of network attack and defense tactics.
  • Knowledge of computer system support functions.
  • Knowledge of Risk Management Framework (RMF) requirements.
  • Knowledge of the OSI model, routing protocols, and subnetting.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and privacy principles used to manage risks related to the use, processing, storage, and transmission of information or data.
  • Knowledge of security systems, intrusion detection systems, firewalls, anti-virus software, log management, authentication systems, content filtering, etc.
  • Knowledge of information security program management and project management principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of complex multi-user network systems utilizing PCs, routers, switches, and servers.
  • Knowledge of complex information technology security infrastructure hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of complex software applications running on LANS, PCs, and file servers.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational, prioritization, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and through formal presentations at the technical and non-technical level.
  • Proven ability to develop an effective, collaborative working relationship with a variety of representative groups with potentially dissimilar priorities.
