About the position

The Dairy Plant Sanitarian position at the Ohio Department of Agriculture is responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of dairy products produced and processed in Ohio. This role involves conducting inspections of dairy facilities, collecting samples for laboratory analysis, and enforcing public health controls. The Sanitarian will work closely with dairy producers, haulers, and processors to maintain compliance with state and federal regulations, while also educating the industry on relevant laws and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of dairy facilities, records, and reports as per Chapter 917 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • Conduct examinations for issuance of weigher, sampler, or tester licenses.
  • Collect and transport samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Test public health controls of pasteurization equipment and initiate enforcement actions as necessary.
  • Explain dairy rules, laws, and program policies to the dairy industry.
  • Conduct field reviews of dairy equipment, devices, and systems.
  • Investigate complaints and offer solutions.
  • Review plans for new or altered milking systems, dairy equipment, and facilities.
  • Prepare inspection reports and interoffice correspondence.
  • Assist in conducting special studies and give presentations to industry groups.

Requirements

  • Completion of an undergraduate core program in agriculture from an accredited college or university, specializing in dairy science, animal science, or food science.
  • At least 24 months of training or experience in management of dairy production or dairy processing operations is preferred.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Registration to practice as an environmental health specialist issued by the Ohio Department of Health within 3 years from the date of appointment.
