About the position

The Dairy Plant Sanitarian position at the Ohio Department of Agriculture is responsible for ensuring the safety and quality of dairy products produced and processed in Ohio. This role involves conducting inspections, collecting samples, and enforcing compliance with state and federal regulations. The Sanitarian will work closely with dairy facilities to maintain public health standards and provide education on dairy laws and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of dairy facilities, records, and reports as per Ohio Revised Code.
  • Examine applications for weigher, sampler, or tester licenses.
  • Collect and transport samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Test public health controls of pasteurization equipment and initiate enforcement actions as necessary.
  • Explain dairy rules, laws, and program policies to industry stakeholders.
  • Conduct field reviews of dairy equipment and systems.
  • Investigate complaints and provide solutions.
  • Review plans for new or altered milking systems and dairy facilities.
  • Prepare inspection reports and interoffice correspondence.
  • Assist in conducting special studies and presentations to industry groups.
  • Collect data for potential rule changes and testify in administrative hearings.

Requirements

  • Completion of an undergraduate core program in agriculture with specialization in dairy science, animal science, or food science from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 24 months of training or experience in management of dairy production or processing operations is preferred.
  • Ability to provide own transportation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in regulatory compliance and public health related to food safety inspection.
  • Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
