About the position

The Dam Safety Inspector position is a critical role within the Maine State Dam Safety Program, responsible for overseeing the safety of all dams under State regulation. This position requires a licensed professional engineer to conduct inspections, assess risk levels, and ensure compliance with safety standards. The inspector will also assist dam owners in creating emergency action plans and supervise the Assistant Engineer, all while working under the direction of the Operations and Response Division Director. Extensive travel across the state is required, making this role vital for community safety and dam management.

Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections and hazard assessments of dams and reservoirs across the State.
• Ensure structural safety inspections of significant and high-hazard dams.
• Produce detailed inspection reports and serve as a technical expert.
• Apply for grants and budget for program resources.
• Collaborate with various stakeholders to manage all dams effectively.
• Provide support in dam safety guidance and emergency response.
• Provide oversight to the Assistant Dam Inspector.

Requirements

• Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Maine.
• Experience in the inspection and design of dams.
• Knowledge of civil engineering, structural analysis, and hydrology.
• Strong communication skills for technical writing and public engagement.
• Supervisory and management skills to oversee subordinate staff.
• Budgeting knowledge and ability to manage a statewide dam inspection program.
