About the position

The Electronic Designer position at Oak Ridge National Laboratory involves designing, building, and maintaining beamline electrical systems, including motion control and specialized sample environments. The role provides an opportunity for a skilled technician to gain experience in motion control and various control interfaces while supporting the networking and computing infrastructure for beamlines. The position requires collaboration with other technical groups and external scientific users, contributing to the operational needs of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).

Responsibilities

  • Prepare drawings and assembly/test instructions for electrical and electronic systems.
  • Provide technical guidance to staff fabricating assemblies for instrument control systems.
  • Procure and track spare inventory levels of assemblies, components, and cables.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting using electronic test equipment.
  • Assemble prototype platforms and test stands as necessary.
  • Support routine maintenance procedures and new instrument installations.
  • Follow work control procedures for installations and preventative maintenance routines.
  • Provide operational support for the Instrument Data Acquisition and Controls system.

Requirements

  • AS degree in electronics or related field with 5 or more years of proven experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to prepare layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Capable of interpreting manufacturer data sheets and technical documents.
  • Ability to create, interpret, and follow test procedures.
  • Working knowledge of various types of test equipment such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Creo, or SolidWorks.
  • Experience with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with motion control, PID control, ladder logic.
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and Linux Operating Systems.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley PLCs, Galil and Parker controllers.
  • Basic soldering skills.
  • Experience working at a National Laboratory or a scientific research facility.
