About the position

The Data Analyst and Machine Learning Specialist at UMBC is responsible for conducting, interpreting, and presenting analytical results that support the university's mission and strategic goals. This role involves utilizing both internally developed and vendor-provided tools to enhance the university's continuous improvement efforts, particularly in student success initiatives. The position requires collaboration with campus stakeholders to develop and assess projects aimed at increasing enrollment, graduation, and retention rates, as well as improving academic advising and student learning outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation, training, and effective use of analytics systems by campus stakeholders.
  • Identify, prioritize, and conduct analytical projects that align with the university's mission and strategic plans.
  • Use data and methods to uncover patterns and perform statistical inference.
  • Curate and present real-time data in innovative ways to address new challenges.
  • Prepare high-quality reports and visualizations to interpret findings clearly.
  • Support student experience initiatives aimed at improving retention and graduation rates.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate research assistants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in economics, mathematics/statistics, computer science, or related analytical fields.
  • 2 years of experience in analytics and machine learning modeling.
  • 2 years of experience in data warehouse report creation and data extraction using SQL.
  • 2 years of programming experience in Python, R, Julia, and HTML/CSS/Javascript.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science and Engineering, or Mathematics.
  • 4 years of experience with AI/ML modeling and Tableau dashboard creation.
  • Experience with HelioCampus data warehouse and Tableau reporting.
  • Candidates pursuing or holding doctorates will receive strong consideration.
