The Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking two data managers to join a dedicated team of data managers and biostatisticians. This team supports the Center's clinical trials, observational cohort studies, and pilot programs. The primary responsibility of the data managers will be to gain a deep understanding of PAIR's study protocols and translate that understanding into the creation of appropriately structured analytic files, queries, data collection tools, data pipelines, and external data requests that comply with data use agreements. The data managers will need to demonstrate a strong knowledge of research concepts and data structures, particularly in the healthcare setting, and will be expected to communicate effectively and openly with collaborators, both internal and external, regarding technical requirements and study design considerations. In addition to the above, the data managers will be responsible for planning data acquisition, preservation, and destruction, establishing data use agreements on behalf of the Center, and maintaining complete documentation. Successful candidates must possess significant data programming experience in R (preferred) and/or Python, as well as SQL. Familiarity with MS Access and SAS is also beneficial. Attention to detail and the ability to convey nuanced technical information clearly and concisely to various audiences—including project managers, investigators, technical and non-technical external stakeholders, biostatisticians, and other data managers—will be essential for success in this role. The position also involves writing R scripts to assess data quality, generating reports, and preparing analysis-ready datasets. Data managers will design, test, and maintain data flows and databases to support study recruitment and data collection, create and maintain documentation for data resources, and contribute to the development of organizational systems for programs, data files, queries, and documentation files. They will review drafts and provide comments/revisions on data use agreements and develop plans to ensure compliance. Additionally, they will create flowcharts, summary documents, and other presentation aids to facilitate collective understanding of data-related workflows, provide training to research coordinators and project managers on data processes, and participate constructively in study team meetings and PAIR Center-wide discussions. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
