About the position

The Data Analyst Specialist position is a critical role within the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of the State of Rhode Island, which serves as the legislative audit agency. This position is not remote or hybrid; it requires in-office work only. The OAG is responsible for conducting various types of audits, including financial, compliance, and performance audits, to provide independent and reliable information to the General Assembly. The audits aim to assess the State's financial condition, ensure compliance with federal regulations, and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of government programs. The audit reports generated by the OAG enhance accountability by providing objective information to Rhode Island citizens regarding the operations of their State government. As the Data Analyst Specialist, the individual will play a pivotal role in managing and analyzing data obtained from the State's information systems. This position is being elevated to a full-time responsibility within the office, reflecting the growing importance of data in conducting governmental audits. The Data Analyst Specialist will be responsible for obtaining and formatting data from various government information systems, developing the overall database structure using SQL, and building and maintaining a data warehouse to support a wide array of audit procedures. The role will also involve collaborating with audit teams to provide data, define and implement data mining procedures, and generate reports or data extracts to support audit planning and analysis. Additionally, the position will require providing architecture and design expertise for audit data projects and ensuring strategic collaboration with audit managers and the Auditor General to meet the organization's audit objectives.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, data science, statistics, information systems, or a related field.
  • Demonstrable understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience with data warehouse capabilities.
  • High level proficiency with data analysis and database management applications (e.g., SQL, Access, ACL, Arbutus).
  • Independent work ethic and high level of personal self-motivation.
  • Ability to collaborate with audit teams on specific projects.
  • Basic knowledge of IT security practices.
