About the position

The Data Analyst/Systems Engineer at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) plays a crucial role in providing high-impact analysis and system engineering solutions to support national defense efforts. This position involves conducting technical analysis of the Aegis Weapon Control System, characterizing system capabilities, and developing tools for data visualization and performance analysis. The role emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and professional growth within a dedicated team focused on addressing real-world challenges faced by warfighters.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct highly technical analysis of the Aegis Weapon Control System (WCS) to evaluate system performance in support of fleet studies, flight test events, and system engineering studies.
  • Characterize system capabilities and limitations, identify trends and outliers, and perform root cause analysis.
  • Support concept and feasibility studies to assist in the development of future capabilities and requirements.
  • Develop tools to analyze and interpret combat system performance and visualize data in innovative ways.
  • Contribute to WCS system engineering efforts by assessing system design and evaluating algorithms.
  • Present work through briefings to technical staff, program leadership, and pivotal decision makers.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
  • 1+ years of related professional experience.
  • Proficient in using Python and/or MATLAB for data manipulation and visualization.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly self-motivated and driven to understand data trends and root causes.
  • Strong technical written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teams and external partners.
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret level security clearance by start date.

Nice-to-haves

  • MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field.
  • 3+ years of related professional experience.
  • Proficiency with Python data science libraries (e.g. NumPy, Pandas).
  • Familiarity with object-oriented programming languages such as C++ or Java.
  • Experience working with high or variable-fidelity models and simulations.
  • Familiarity with software version control systems (e.g. git).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a desire to take on leadership roles for analysis studies.
  • Working knowledge of the Aegis Weapon System or other missile defense systems.
