About the position

The Data Analyst at the University of Maryland plays a crucial role in designing, developing, and maintaining various data extracts, queries, reports, surveys, statistical models, and visualizations. Utilizing advanced analytical tools, the analyst informs decision-making processes related to recruitment, admissions, scholarships, financial aid, enrollment, retention, and graduation. This position is integral to the Office of Assessment & Technology's (OAT's) Data Team, collaborating closely with the Technology Team and various Enrollment Management partners, as well as other campus constituents. The analyst is expected to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of data outputs while making recommendations that align with campus enrollment goals and university policies. The incumbent must exercise independent judgment and analytical skills when working with campus partners to ensure that data methods comply with federal, state, and university regulations. They are responsible for delivering documentation and training materials in a manner that is easily understood by end users, including those unfamiliar with student information and data environments. As a functional expert in enrollment management data, the analyst offers recommendations for research strategies that yield valuable information for campus planners and decision-makers. The role requires the ability to ask clarifying questions to ascertain specific needs and to seek consultation for unique issues. Additionally, the Data Analyst produces both routine and ad hoc reports, including dashboards and benchmarks that assess the quality and efficacy of the institution. Adherence to compliance and ethical standards is paramount, ensuring that data is presented with integrity. The position demands a high level of analytical capability, trustworthiness with data, and a focus on thoroughness, as well as the ability to integrate analytical knowledge across various settings.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain data extracts, queries, reports, surveys, statistical models, and visualizations.
  • Inform decision-making related to recruitment, admissions, scholarships, financial aid, enrollment, retention, and graduation.
  • Ensure accuracy and efficiency of data outputs and make recommendations consistent with findings and university policy.
  • Collaborate with the Technology Team and Enrollment Management partners to ensure data methods comply with regulations.
  • Deliver documentation and training materials that are easily understood by end users.
  • Serve as a functional expert and resource for enrollment management data, offering recommendations for research strategies.
  • Produce routine and ad hoc internal and external reports, including dashboards and benchmarks.
  • Adhere to compliance and ethical standards in data presentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an analytical field such as social, computer, or information science.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with complex data sets and statistical tools.
  • Experience developing data processing documentation and providing data use training.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of research methodologies using statistical software.
  • Strong problem-solving, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience with statistical/analytical tools such as SAS, Google Looker Studio, Salesforce, Tableau, Python, and SQL.
  • Prior experience in a college or university setting, particularly in Enrollment Management or Institutional Research.
  • Experience with state and federal reporting in higher education.
  • Specific experience with SQL and relational databases.
