About the position

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) in Washington, DC is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to enhance its data analytics and research capabilities, particularly in the areas of juvenile and criminal justice. This role involves developing algorithms and statistical methods to analyze data, evaluate the effectiveness of justice initiatives, and provide data-driven insights to support the agency's mission. The Senior Data Scientist will lead a team of data scientists and collaborate with various stakeholders to improve public safety data accessibility and inform policy decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop computational algorithms and statistical methods to find patterns in multiple database sources.
  • Design, build, and test data models, algorithms, and predictive models.
  • Identify and utilize predictive modeling and machine learning techniques to improve data quality.
  • Collaborate with internal partners to evaluate juvenile and criminal justice initiatives.
  • Contribute to interagency data efforts and expand accessible prosecution data platforms.
  • Compile and analyze datasets to provide data-driven insights for strategic initiatives.
  • Develop correlations, models, algorithms, and visualizations using statistical methods.
  • Initiate and respond to requests for customized reports and complex queries.
  • Provide consultation on statistical and research matters relevant to OAG's work.
  • Train staff in data collection, entry, and storage.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in statistics, economics, data analytics, data science, public policy, or a related field.
  • At least two years of related work experience or a Ph.D. in a similar field.
  • Expertise with statistical analytical tools such as Tableau and Power BI.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like R and Python, and database languages such as SQL.
  • Experience evaluating program effectiveness using data for continuous learning.
  • Significant project management experience from inception to implementation.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially with non-technical audiences.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with lawyers or in District of Columbia public policy.
  • Curiosity and interest in public policy and public interest work, particularly in criminal justice.
