About the position

The Data Analytics Specialist 1 position at the Department of Labor & Industry is a full-time role focused on leading data science initiatives within the Unemployment Compensation programs. The specialist will utilize their analytical skills to make operational decisions, solve problems, and enhance the efficiency of operations through data analysis and visualization. This role involves collaboration with various agencies and requires a strong foundation in statistical analysis and data management.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, developing, and implementing data science projects to analyze and report information from the Geographic Solutions Unemployment System (GUS) and other data sets.
  • Conducting statistical analyses and delivering data visualizations to identify trends among UC claimants, employers, and staff production.
  • Translating policy and operational questions into analytic project plans.
  • Identifying applicable data sets and data elements for analysis.
  • Designing scripts and algorithms to compile, merge, clean, and process large data sets.
  • Communicating findings and results of data analyses effectively to stakeholders.
  • Developing forecasting models to project trends in unemployment compensation claims for budget, policy, and staffing purposes.
  • Identifying deficiencies or omissions in data sets or data collection techniques.
  • Training, coaching, and mentoring other program staff and managers on data analytic techniques.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, data science, economics, actuarial science, geographic information systems (GIS), or a related STEM field.
  • Two years of professional quantitative analytical experience utilizing data preparation, statistical analysis, or data visualization software programs.
  • One or more years of full-time professional experience with SQL (Structured Query Language).
  • Successful completion of the Data Analytics Trainee program (commonwealth title) may substitute for experience.
