About the position

The Data Architect (SA3) at Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is responsible for leading the transformation of data management and architecture to enhance city services for over 750,000 residents. This role involves developing and implementing the One Seattle Data Strategy, ensuring data governance, security, and accessibility while integrating diverse data sources into a cohesive platform. The Data Architect will also oversee technology projects that support SPU's data strategies, promoting data transparency and equity in all initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement SPU One Seattle Data Strategy to leverage data for better outcomes.
  • Design and deliver a Data Governance Framework with effective data architecture and integration principles.
  • Lead the SSTP Data Infrastructure and Business Intelligence Initiative to enhance SPU's analytic capabilities.
  • Assess and improve data platform architecture, design, and performance requirements.
  • Integrate data management into SPU's Technology Roadmap and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Oversee technology projects supporting SPU's Data Strategies and implement tools for data quality and compliance.
  • Develop policies governing data ownership, stewardship, quality, and access.
  • Establish a data governance structure with key stakeholders within SPU.
  • Serve as SPU's Data Champion in citywide committees and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Promote data transparency, accessibility, equity, and inclusion in SPU data initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of experience in a data architect or related role with a track record of developing data strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of database technologies (SQL), data integration frameworks, and cloud services (AWS, Azure).
  • Experience with big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark) and data streaming services (Kafka).
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python or Java.
  • Expertise in data modeling and data warehousing principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Eight years of experience in a data architect or related role.
  • Solid understanding of data security principles and privacy laws.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong understanding of technology trends and industry best practices.
