About the position

The Data Assistant Sr. at Northwestern University plays a crucial role in managing and analyzing data for clinical trials within the Cancer Center. This position involves coordinating data entry, ensuring data integrity, and providing support to project staff. The Data Assistant Sr. is responsible for compiling data, creating reports, and consulting on data management and methodological issues, making it essential for the success of clinical research projects.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and assess customer data needs.
  • Assist in identifying data integration and related records solutions.
  • Collaborate on various data management projects including variable definitions and storage.
  • Obtain required training for electronic data capture systems and applicable protocol-specific training.
  • Abstract required patient data from medical records for entry into case report forms.
  • Follow timelines for data entry and query resolution as stated in SOP and sponsor contracts.
  • Contact other hospitals and physician offices to obtain medical records as needed.
  • Act as the main contact for monitors/CROs for data query resolution.
  • Manage long-term follow-up with patients who are no longer receiving active treatment.
  • Respond to sponsor/CRO data concerns and escalate issues to management as appropriate.
  • Ensure all data is obtained and verified for subsequent analysis.
  • Provide updates and summaries regarding statistics.
  • Provide administrative support to the organizational area.
  • Attend mandatory scheduled meetings.
  • Increase knowledge of disease-specific oncology studies for efficient data abstraction and query resolution.
  • Assess protocol compliance and communicate with study coordinators and PIs regarding compliance issues.
  • Assist with internal audit requests.
  • Provide input on CTO policies and procedures regarding data entry monitoring.
  • Write queries and reports and create necessary analysis.
  • Schedule and participate in monitor visits for assigned studies.
  • Facilitate EMR access for monitors and resolve issues noted in follow-up letters.
  • Assist with sponsor audit requests and run/distribute standard scheduled reports.
  • Maintain and update report inventory.
  • Assist in mentoring and training entry-level data assistants.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 4 years of data entry or similar experience required.
  • Ability to understand complex pathology data and cancer treatment regimens and their toxicities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, nurses, technicians, and co-workers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Critical thinking skills.
  • Self-learner.

Nice-to-haves

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in health sciences, social sciences, advertising/marketing, or related field.
  • Experience in data management in a health field, exposure to cancer clinical trials.
  • Computer literate in basic software, internet use, and cancer-related databases.
  • At least 1 year of work experience in a customer service-oriented position.
  • 1-2 years' experience in cancer research.
  • 1-2 years' experience in Clinical Trials.
