About the position

The Data Infrastructure Cabling Technician at phoenixNAP is responsible for the installation and maintenance of cabling systems within the Data Center. This role ensures that cabling installations meet quality standards and service level agreements, while also providing support across various Data Center operations. The technician will work with a variety of cabling types and technologies, ensuring minimal maintenance needs and maximizing data throughput.

Responsibilities

  • Physically install Category 5, Enhanced Category 5, Category 6 and Fiber Optic Structure Cable Distribution Systems.
  • Install outlets, pull cable, perform fire stopping and pre-termination, including organizing, forming, dressing, and labeling cables to industry standards.
  • Terminate, assemble, and install 8-pin modular connectors, coaxial connectors, light crimp connectors, and optical fiber LC and/or SC ceramic connectors.
  • Accurately test copper and fiber cables to required certification parameters using appropriate test equipment.
  • Diagnose and correct copper and optical fiber problems.
  • Remove and demolish abandoned cables.
  • Maintain and reference industry standards including ANSI, EIA/TIA, and local and National Electrical Code.
  • Perform site surveys, read and use blueprints and floor plans, and conduct visual site inspections.
  • Determine Data Center and equipment layouts and install Data Center hardware including backboards, connecting blocks, racks, patch panels, and fiber enclosures.
  • Install entrance facility grounding infrastructure and perform ground tests.
  • Perform cable splices for copper and optical fiber (mechanical and fusion).
  • Perform and supervise work in retrofit and new construction environments and implement cutovers.
  • Work safely at all times utilizing the necessary Personal Protection Equipment.
  • Demonstrate safe working practices to other technicians.
  • Serve as a liaison between office and field, communicating all information that is not classified as confidential.
  • Perform administrative tasks including documenting test results and as-builds, completing safety reports, maintaining logbooks, and providing labor summary reports.
  • Instruct other technicians on techniques and work as needed to keep project work flowing.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after hours.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of directly related experience.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, cabling standards, and components.
  • Must be able to work safely following company policy/procedures on safety.
  • Familiarity with splicing anaerobic termination of fiber optics.
  • Previous experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
