About the position

The Chief Engineer (CE) role at AWS involves overseeing the operation and management of critical infrastructure systems within data centers. This position serves as the primary escalation point for facilities-related issues, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of various systems while providing training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians. The CE will also be responsible for implementing new practices, conducting root cause analyses, and collaborating with IT managers to optimize facility performance. This role requires a hands-on approach to troubleshooting and maintaining mission-critical equipment, contributing to the overall safety and operational excellence of AWS data centers.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues.
  • Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems such as switchgear, generators, UPS systems, and cooling equipment.
  • Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot facilities within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA).
  • Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and work with Facility Manager to set team culture.
  • Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.
  • Assist in the build-out of new facilities and projects to increase current facility efficiency.
  • Work outside of normal business hours for routine maintenance and respond to out-of-hours emergency calls.
  • Communicate complex technical information to a non-technical audience.
  • Coordinate projects with IT managers and other business leaders to manage capacity and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Ensure adherence to safety procedures by vendor and Amazon staff.
  • Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on facility operations and maintenance.
  • Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other administrative tools for day-to-day tasks.

Requirements

  • Technical training or degree in a relevant field (e.g., electrical, mechanical).
  • 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience.
  • 3+ years of data center or mission-critical facilities experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • 4+ years of Data Center Engineering Experience.
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience leading a team.
